Austin visitors and residents alike will love the hipster brunch locale known as Hillside Farmacy. Just east of downtown, the restaurant is just a few minutes from the city center and is easily accessible via Uber. The neighborhood is filled with lovely brick buildings housing boutiques and yoga studios, and I even passed by someone painting a colorful mural. Next time you find yourself looking for a new Austin brunch spot to check out, definitely head to Hillside Farmacy.
Hillside Farmacy is an eclectic and charming restaurant located on E 11th Street in the center of East Austin. The building dates back to the 1950’s when it was an actual pharmacy (hence the name). The new owners re-purposed it into a ‘farm fresh’ restaurant perfect for Austin’s hipster and eco-friendly crowd. Hillside Farmacy offers traditional southern food with a hipster twist.
I visited Hillside Farmacy in Austin with a friend on a Sunday morning and was instantly charmed by the old pharmacy decor lining the walls. The restaurant’s front room is open and airy and features a fully stocked cocktail bar along with an oyster bar. The main dining room transports you back to the fifties – there are old china cabinets lining the walls and filled with old pharmacy bottles and signage. A wraparound patio is dotted with umbrellas and plenty more seating, if the weather is nice. On the day I visited, it wasn’t, so we opted to sit in the back dining room, right next to one of the large cabinets. It was interesting to look at all the antiques housed inside, with bottles boasting things such as “Golden Medical Discovery” and “Cure-All Oils”.
Arrive at 10am or earlier and you will most likely be seated right away. By 10:30 there is a bit of a wait, and by 11:30 the place is packed. Hillside Farmacy has a small bar area perfect for ordering mimosas while you wait for a table. I ordered the biscuits & gravy to eat and found myself in absolute Southern food heaven.
Two biscuits were placed in a bowl of perfectly seasoned country gravy and topped with sliced green onions – a great touch that I will have to add to my own recipe at home! There was also an option to add a fried egg on top, which I’m sure many people would enjoy. I devoured the entire plate as quickly as was politely possible, and am still dreaming of more a day later. When can I go back to Hillside Farmacy to feast upon this deliciousness once more?!
For the budget-conscious diner, this is a great choice – I paid around $15 for my meal and a mimosa, a great deal! I will certainly be back for more biscuits and gravy in the near future. I don’t think I would even be able to bring myself to branch out and try another menu item because I actually can’t stop thinking about that meal! If there were ever a problem to have, this would be it.
Hillside Farmacy can be found at 1209 East 11th Street in Austin, TX.
